No Vacancy opened it’s doors last week after months of graft. Below are few snaps from the show at Wolstenholme Creative Space, a collection of screen prints, animation, audio, illustration and installation – probably the most ambitious project I’ve undertaken in a long time – and great fun. Young Pines – No Vacancy Promotion

For weeks now I’ve been grafting away on our self initiated Young Pines project. With the help of local art/literature superheroes Mercy. ‘No Vacancy’ – the idea came about through months of discussion and all manner of ideas. The final theme of the show explores the poetry of Greg Gibson and the story of an overpopulated hotel and it’s residents – the final works are a mixture of illustration, installation, video and audio. All the pieces explore the theme with a particularly dark and humorous edge; taking Greg’s writing as a stand point to create a piece of illustration/design – leaving it open to viewer to then interpret there own ideas about the story.

Below are a few snaps from the zine we created as promotion based on one of the poems from Greg entitled ‘Lobby’. The poem immediately lent itself to be used as an invitation; 50 were created in total, each hand stitched and screen printed by hand. Everyone loves a bit of bespoke print and it only seemed right to work this piece up as a taster for the show itself. We also leaked a clip from a animation by Will Daw and one of four tracks we recorded with local musician Jon Davies and performance artists Mark Greenwood, based on the poetry of Greg. Last week saw the opening of our show down at Wolstenholme Creative Space, Liverpool. The response so far has been great and overall a really fun project to work on.

Stacey Rozich – Earth

Awesome illustrations and style from Stacey Rozich. Clocked her work a last year when I picked up Earth’s album ‘Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light’. Something about the imagery and music works so well together; the colours, patterns and mythical style of artwork. Great stuff.

Moon Life

Interesting project from Alicia Framis entitled Moon Life. The project speculates on the possibility that humans will live in space in the future. With this thought in mind, the project is a stimulus for artists, architects and designers to create futuristic, radical, political but humane concepts for an extreme lunar environment. The branding from EDHV brings together some simple but intriguing branding ideas.

Was lucky enough to catch these guys at a recent talk in Liverpool entitled Kosmica part of Republic of the Moon exhibtion at Fact. Some totally off the wall but inspiring ideas.

Stunning animation from French comic writer, animator and film director Sylvain Chomet. Watched this the other night; visual treat all round. Great style and art direction along with some awesome landscapes shots of Edinburgh. Well worth a watch.

Brutalism – Paul Adams

Architecture has always been a huge inspiration for me; I was always torn back in college whether Graphic Design was the right route or whether I should pursue a career in designing buildings. I’ve recently been taking a step back to this time of inspiration and looking at alot of Brutlist style architecture; the bold lines, the repetitive angles and defined geometries are stunning.

When I was a kid me and my mates use to spend hours skating around Preston bus station; back then I really didn’t appreciate my surroundings. Buildings like this; often hated by the majority of the public; are a rare breed and should be cherished. Photographer Paul Adams has taken some beautiful shots of the place; there has been alot of speculation for the future of PBS, fingers crossed it will soon pass – I’ve some fond memories of this place and would hate to see it go.
